Antiquated spectators viewed the divine bodies move consistently against the brilliant sky. Those movements inspired the word "Planets",  from Greek for wanderer. The people of old named and regarded the sun, moon, and five planets that they accepted rotated around  Earth: Mercury, Venus,Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.

In the sixteenth century, Nicolaus Copernicus contested the idea that most grand bodies orbited. Earth with his proposal of a heliocentric universe. Uranus was discovered- rather, it was identified as a planet and not a star- by British astronomer William Herschel in 1781. In 1846, German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle identified Neptune. Tiny Pluto turned up on a photographic plate at Arizona's Lowell Observatory in 1930.

The list of our solar system's nine planets was challenged in 2005 when the discovery of a large body in the Kuiper Belt reopened rigorous discussion among astronomers about planetary classification.

dwarf planets
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) met in Prague in August 2006 and, though only a fraction of its members were present for the vote, arrived at a new definition of planets. The effect of decision changed the lineup of our solar system, leaving the number of planets and "elite." The IAU classified Pluto with two smallish bodies as dwarf planets. Ongoing discoveries no doubt will continue to change our view of the solar system.

MORE NEW PLANETS
The definition of planets and the list of the planets in our solar system may keep changing. At a certain point during the incredible planetary purge of - 2006, the IAU quickly proposed a definition that would have included more than a hundred items having a place with the class of "Planet." Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, and Eris are dwarf planets; the latter three and their moons are further designated as plutoids, dwarf planets found beyond Neptune in the Kuiper belt. Haumea, officially recognized in 2008, is the nearest plutoid. This egg-shaped dwarf planet spins rapidly, one rotation every four hours.

FAST FACTS: Newly discovered dwarf planets suggest that planets up to ten times the size of Earth may be orbiting far beyond Pluto.
A PLANET
A PLANET is a celestial body that orbit a star has required a roughly round shape by its own gravity, and contains enough mass that its gravitational field has cleared its orbit of debris. A dwarf planet meets only the first two of this requirement.

  what are the 12 planets
TWELVE PLANETS, including dwarf planets, now constitute our solar system, seen below from left to right; Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Haumea, and Eris. Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, and Eris are dwarf planets.

CERES, the largest known asteroid in asteroid belt, was discovered in  1801 by Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi. Shaped like a flattened sphere and having a volume approximately 27 percent that of  Earth's moons, Ceres contains a rocky core  surrounded by a thick layer of ice.

Eris, another of the three dwarf  planets in Earth's solar system,  circles the sun match farther out than even Neptune an Pluto Discovered in 2005, Eris has a diameter larger than of Pluto. It has its own moon, Dysnomia.
